MALAYSIAN SUPER SERIES – ROUND 2 – BIKES

Suited in his new Alpinestars attire and new AGV helmet, Australian Brent Odgers romped to another double win and 50 maximum points at Round 2 of the Malaysian Super Series (MSS) bike competitions at Sepang Circuit today to take firm control of the Superbike Championship.

Minutes after the official launch of the 2008 Pineapple Motorsports MSS Racing Team and receiving his new leathers and helmet at his pits, Odgers and team-mate Omar Ali Abdullah hurried to the starting grid for the opening race on their 2007 Honda CBR1000.

While the ceremony may have interrupted Omar’s focus on the race, Odgers kept his eyes on the job; leading the opening Race 1 from start to finish, winning the 15-lap race in 17 minutes 26.442 seconds. Mark Lim was second; coming in more than five seconds later in 17 minutes 31.463 seconds.

Unlike the dry and hot opening race, Race 2 was run on a wet track after afternoon showers hit Sepang; but Odgers continued his awesome form, only to lose the lead in the opening lap. Enter Lap 2, the Australian breezed past Norhisham Mohd and cruised to his second victory for the day.

Odgers’ awesome form of winning all four opening races and the power of the old Honda CBR1000 bike had definitely sent shivers to his rivals as the two-time champion is expected to have an even more powerful bike for the upcoming Round 3 next month.

Speaking at the launch, Pineapple Motorsports Racing team principal Razlan Ahmad Razali said that the team had to delay its 2008 launch to wait for the delivery of their new Honda CBR1000 race machines, which only arrived from Japan two days ago.

“Now that we have the bikes, we would be working on further upgrading it further in preparation and it should be ready for Round 3;” said Razlan, who joined Odgers and Omar in unveiling the new bike and receiving the new race suits and helmets from their sponsors at the ceremony.

Met after the podium ceremony, Odgers said he was anxiously looking forward to try the new bike as he expects closest rival Ahmad Zamani Baharuddin, who skipped this round to race the Asian Grand Prix in Jakarta, would be faster as well with his new Kawasaki ZX10RR.

“There’s no real formula actually on the wins … except that I worked very hard to keep fit. I would also have to thank the entire team for providing a very good machine. Hopefully, we would continue be successful in the remaining three rounds,” Odgers said.

In the 600cc Supersports Championship, former Asian Grand Prix leader Mohd Syahnas Shahidan was in awesome form as well; taking his second double win to further cement his position at the top of the championship standings.

In a crowded field of 36 entries, the opening Race 1 was stopped following a series of crashes and was continued to 13 laps after a discussion between the race officials and the riders. Syahnas kept his composure well to win the race and continue to remain supreme in a wet Race 2.

In the 135cc Production Bike Championship, two-time champion Ahmad Azhar Abdul Hamid revived his hopes of winning a third crown with an emphatic double victory to collect a maximum of 50 championship points.

Missing the opening round to compete in the AAM Petronas Sprinta Malaysian Cub Prix Championship, Ahmad Azhar was in awesome form; leading from start to finish to put the brakes on championship leader Ahmad Nashrul Baharuddin, who finished the round in second place with 36 points for the round.

The defending champion, however, remained at the top of the championship standings with a total of 77 points with R. Karigalan in second with 60 points. Ahmad Azhar had shot to third overall with the 50 points that he collected today.

Round 3 for the bike competitions would be held from June 13 to 15 and would incorporate the car competitions as well.
