Why do you race? I never thought I would because of the risk. But once I started at a BTC (Bike Component Testing held) at the Batu Tiga Circuit I knew that there is nothing that excites me more. During the race, my concentration is only on one thing- catching and overtaking the guy in front. I also love the atmosphere and the guys who ride too. I suppose it becomes a passion about doing better and better. Bikes are so involving, you can't just drive them like a car; you have to move around constantly and there are so many parameters to control which makes it much harder to master. Sportbikers are generally pretty cool people whom I like to hangout with and at the track there is no BS- your lap time says it all. I love speed but have a family to consider and the roads are no place for it. Until I went to the track, I had no (legal) outlet for the need for speed. After the track, racing on roads seems pointless.
What do you do when you’re not racing? I look after a Pipe manufacturing company, Polyolefins Pipe Berhad, I help run this website and the Ducati Club Malaysia.
How long have you been racing? Started doing the MSS in 2003: Rounds 2, 3 & 5 . I also entered the Pan Globlal Endurance Race
What does your wife/partner think about you racing? I think that Lorna does worry about it but she knows that I love it and is supportive. Anyway, she rides horses which is far more dangerous! )
Why did you choose your bike? I was riding a 916 and wanted more power and I liked the look of it- tried it once and was hooked.
What do you like about it? The handling of the bike. It has awesome braking and extremely good throttle response allowing easy use of the performance. The engine is also very linear which makes the performance feel slower than it is- always good for a race bike. I think that overall its performance is very easy to use everywhere. This makes it safer as it is less likely to highside a relative newcomer like myself. The bike is a lot more reliable than its reputation suggests. The desmodromic valve system means less power loss so the bike is more powerful than you might at first expect for a twin. This is why the Ducati MotoGP bikes are so powerful.
What don’t you like about it? The price. The bike has a lot of unnecessary weight in standard trim and Ducatis are costly to modify. Also for a given state of tune (and cost) twins will be less powerful than a 4-cylinder bike. For the price I would have thought that the bike would have come with radial calipers to reduce the unsprung weight.
Have you modified it? • Brembo Front Race Pump • Front Fairing Stay/ Race Fairing • Lightened Flywheel • Sil Motor Steel ø60mm Full System Exhaust • Power Commander PC3 • Race Air Filters.
What do you think your next bike will be? At this point I have no plans to change until Ducati comes out with a V4 Desmosedici road bike- this is only a matter of time. If the cost of racing a twin gets too high for me, I may be forced to consider the 2004 Fireblade. At the moment, the bike still has a lot more ability than me and I race to improve my riding.
